Reference used for the ship in the background. And for the girl in the foreground - a stock artist from dA. I don't remember who it was and don't have the photo anymore, but if you find it: link plz? Thank you
Amongst all the things that capture and captivate, the strongest aspect that grabs me is her face. It is not only gorgeous but it carries so many expressions. Everything is proportioned so well. Her countenance seems hesitant, apprehensive, and in the same respect, strong, and hopeful. All these cover what so many would have been feeling at the time of this intense event. I also like the classic look she has about her. Very statuesque, and yet, with an undeniable breath of life.
The back lighting is subtle and profound. It sets her off so well, as do the various representations of the life and death that came with the explorers discovery. Having the wheat over her heart as her hand clasps it is a wonderful detail that I would hope most would notice about this.
Although there is much to take in about the closer background, the sky has to be the defining factor in the piece. The sun rising, changing night to day. It is without a doubt, stunning.
I've dreamed of someone doing Liberty right. In my minds eye an Indian maiden steps from the forest with a basket of plenty in one arm and the other arm held up holding a half shucked ear of corn. This is close. Really enjoying your work...
