Experiment: how many people can I fit into one painting?
I love how J.W. Waterhouse handles light and color; he paints it in an incredibly subtle way that never appears "impressionistic", strong or surreal, but modest and yet strikingly realistic. Just beautiful! I didn't have any illusions of ever reaching his level of expertise in the near future, but in this painting, I tried to figure out his way of painting, especially skin. It was a lot of fun
The background marble and mosaic are from www.cgtextures.com ; everything else is painted by me. About 60% of the figures is painted using references. These were from many different sources (I think `lockstock and *justmeina , two of my favorite models, were among them) Thanks for looking!
"Decadence" could have been paint centuries ago, it looks like a painting found by archeologists, wondering who was its author... And you would discover another time, another world...
This is simply incredible! The high amount of details catch litteraly your eyes, you want to discover everything, admiring the harmony of colors, the elegance of curves and naked bodies, the balance of the composition. More of this, the background is simply gorgeous! Such realism!
You could perfectly imagine such art in the palace of a King to remind him the "decadence" of antique Latins or Greeks, warning him against luxury, lust, idleness...
Wow! Stunning! I can see that you put a lot of work into this piece. Group pictures like this are really challenging. There's lots of really great little moments. Like the the older couple with the little dog, they make me smile. I also really like the kissing pair by the fountain it's a sweet kiss. Also the totally nude lady toward the window and the way she shyly leans towards her male companion. I know what mean about JW. Waterhouse's use of lighting and color, I think you really did him proud with this piece. Exquisite work!
I really love all your works in this gallery, your love for history, ancient painting and Italy (it's not difficult to guess!). This one in particular it's really great, i'm a Waterhouse addict too, and this work really have that unique atmosphere and light. The only thing i've noticed is the sentence on the wall: during the roman empire it will ben written in latin and not in italian Continua così! Buon lavoro

Impressive painting. The lighting is indeed subtle. Great work! Can you please tell me what is "open format"? I'm trying to understand why does this painting fit into that category.. and I realized I have absolutely no idea what "open format" category is all about.
Gorgeous! Waterhouse is fantastic but to me, this looks liek a work of my absolute favourite pre-Raphaelite, Sir Lawrence Alma- Tademan. Breathtaking!!!! More please!
