Imperial Noon by KristinaGehrmann Imperial Noon by KristinaGehrmann
Emperor Septimius Severus and Empress Iulia Domna with their sons Caracalla and Geta, in the year circa 210.

Recently I found some rare time for personal work, and this is the result :) That, and my near-obsession with the work of Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
Medium used is Photoshop with a Wacom tablet as always.

On Conceptart.org you can see how I painted it: [link]

Just a note on historical accuracy, Septimius Severus was an African, so he would have been dark skinned. We even have a painted representation of his where his skin is significantly darker than that of his family.

Greetings,

This evening while searching for images and topics on ancient Rome, I landed on your site and saw this wonderful image at a major turning point in the history of the Roman Empire. My knowledge does not come close to the scholars of ancient times, however, allow me to suggest that the image's accuracy would be closer to 200 CE as opposed to 10 years later. First, Septimius Severus, his wife and two sons were in Britain from 208 - 211. Both sons were older than pictured in this magnificent image at that time (Caracalla was 22 and his brother about 19 in 210). The family was based in what is now known as York, England, in 210, in a campaign which eventually worn out Emperor Septimius Severus (he died in 211, about 65, a ripe old age for a Roman noble). Please accept my thoughts in the spirit of historical accuracy, yet appreciating the fine detail of this wonderful image. I believe it captures his advancing years quite well.

Severus, eh? Hmm, wasn't he the one who succeeded Didius Julianus and basically brought some legitimacy back to the Imperial throne? It's certainly sad that Rome eventually became so corrupt that a man was able to become Emperor by simply buying his way in to power, but it's also heartening to read about the intermittent good emperors who stepped in to stem the flow of decay.

This is amazing work and you've really earned all the accolades you've been getting for it. Faved.

Beautiful work.

I have one critique though. The colors are beautiful and I think you made great choices (purple on the Emperor is a good choice), but it looks very clean and flat. Your love of Tadema shows, you may just want to give a little more depth to your fabrics and background.

A lovely, interesting image with good details--and a horrific backstory. Those kids aren't going to stop quarreling any time soon. Very nice colors, and a great sense of drama--I quite like the expressions of the two legionaries behind them.
