Reunion at Ostend Harbour - Homecoming - 1945 by KristinaGehrmann Reunion at Ostend Harbour - Homecoming - 1945 by KristinaGehrmann
Inspired by a popular song from the early 20th century.

Time would come for roll call,
Time for us to part,
Darling I'd caress you
And press you to my heart,
And there 'neath that far-off lantern light,
I'd hold you tight,
We'd kiss good night,
My Lili of the Lamplight,
My own Lili Marleen.

Orders came for sailing,
Somewhere over there
All confined to barracks
was more than I could bear
I knew you were waiting in the street
I heard your feet,
But could not meet,
My Lili of the Lamplight,
my own Lili Marleen.

- T. Connor (1944)

Medium: Photoshop and Wacom tablet
Time taken: estimated between 20 and 40 hours, spread over several days
References: [link]

Time for some truth! When I said this was inspired by "Lili Marleen", I lied. In reality it was inspired by the Tintin fanfiction "Homecoming" which you can find on archiveofourown.org and on the Tintin kink meme on dreamwidth.
So, yes, there's a Tintin version of this painting - to be precise, a Tintin/Haddock slash version, and you can see it on my fangirl blog: Ruined childhood this way

Lovely! It has an oil painting feel to it. My, one of your strengths seem to be soft, atmospheric lighting. :D

This is a very gooodd setting of that wonderful
song...

Lili Marleen was of course _more_ than "popular"
- it was _the_ romantic ballad for many of those tough years...
- I hope that you have seen & heard the many versions
of it on Youtube! Of course, you must know that Marlene D
sang it for the Allied troups ... it must have been exclusively
for them - I don;t know whether she was allowed to come and
go, after she had the courage to stand up against you-know-who...

I need to come back to this and leave you a proper comment, but can I just say OMG WOW?! So much passion, so much beauty. I want to be this girl some day, and at the same time, I'd rather not (I don't want my man to leave me). But it's so beautiful.

As a kid it was obvious to me that tintin loves haddock and vice versa :) I actually liked it without even understanding homosexuality. Imo it is us adults that try to make everything dirty and "improper" in our minds. Kids aren't stupid not to understand love.
